AASSP song

We are the students of AASSP
We come from countries, near and far
We have Americans, Dutch and Swedes and more
We're all for one! We're one for all! We're AASSP
We investigate to find out why
Read, write and multiply
We care and share
And when it's time we say goodbye
To the friends we've made at AASSP
We're all for one! We're one for all! We're AASSP

Yesterday we went to Peterhof with third grade.

We all got sooooooooooooo wet because we stept on stones and somtimes if we go on a rong stone then you get very wet because there comes a waterfall of water from around the stones and you get saoking wet. And there is an other place where you can get wet that is a big tree and if you steps on a rong stone so much water falls down the tree.

Edited by Miss Christian to add: Above is a picture of our class at the exact moment the cannon was fired. I jumped when I took this picture! Below is an exact copy of the angel that is on top of the spire on the cathedral at the fortress. We learned that a man who repaired the actual angel (it's 122.5 meters high!) was given the reward of eating at any restraunt, cafe or pub in St. Petersburg for free for the rest of his life. We think that was a great reward! We made wished on the angel's feet.

12 February
Happy Monday! We have a busy week ahead of us.
On Tuesday, please bring a small box to school. A shoe box works well. We'll decorate them to hold our valentines.
On Wednesday we'll celebrate Valentine's Day. Please bring a card for each student in our class. (We'll start working on these in class.)
On Thursday we'll be going to the Russian village to learn about Maslenitsa. Please dress warmly as we'll have time to play in the snow.
On Friday we'll continue to learn about Maslenitsa at school with special activities.
spelling words (**test will be next Monday): happy, better, butter, follow, carry, spell, middle, dinner, supper, possible
"long list" additional words: difficult, success, princess, appropriate
**this spelling rule is a double consonant indicates a short vowel sound
In the previous post, Sung Je included the recipe for pancakes that we used. These are not thin pancakes/crepe/blinis. Make a small pancake (about the size of your hand) in a lightly greased or non-stick pan. Do not tilt the pan to spread the batter. Allow the pancake to cook until you see bubbles forming. Then, flip it. The pancakes should be nicely browned on both sides. We ate ours with homemade butter (it was hard work) and maple syrup.

We finally have SNOW! Second grade has been enjoying playing in the snow. However, we've had lots of cold, wet feet. If you've not sent in an extra pair of socks to keep at school, now would be a good time to do that.
On Thursday we’ll be going to the Puppet Theatre. Be sure to bring a good snack that day because lunch will be late.
On Friday, we’ll be having an “old-fashioned afternoon”. We’re going to be doing different activities the way they did in the book Little House in the Big Woods which we’ve just finished reading together. If you'd like to come in and help, let me know! It’s always a fun afternoon.
And, lastly, thank you to all the parents who volunteered to accompany to Shuvalakova next week. Mrs. Suhonen’s and Mrs. Carney’s schedules best fit with ours, so they will be joining us. We look forward to taking other parents with us on other trips.
spelling words: cool, soon, spoon, food, new, knew, blew, blue, glue, beluga, shampoo, kangaroo, newspaper, balloon, view

re: Pluto for Mr. M
Dear Mr. MacLaughlin,
We wanted to comment about your comment, but our bloggers have been pressed for time.(We love getting your comments.)So, we've nominated our fasted typer to tell you what we think.
We know that some people consider Pluto a planet and some people do not. Second grade is divided on this issue. Some of think Pluto is a planet. Some of us think it's a comet. Some of us aren't sure. It makes us question what makes a planet a planet! The fact that Pluto is unlike the other outer planets (we're very good at identifying patterns and relationships thanks to our morning analogies...and general quest to make sense of the world) and has an orbit more like a comet than the other planets makes us wonder. We all agree if Pluto IS a planet, it's very unlike the other planets.
What do YOU think?
Miss Christian, on behalf of second grade

breaking news
Here are some photos from last week's boat trip on the Neva. We all enjoyed seeing our city from a different perspective. As you can see, the weather was great!

We are excited to be welcoming a new student to our class next week. Karolina is from Czech Republic. She is just starting to learn English. The four girls in our class are especially glad that she is joining us!
Spelling words this week are homophones again: your, you're, whale, wail, tale, tail, sale, sail, see, sea

My apologies for the difficulties with blogger this week. I'm going to re-post our spelling words and hope that everything is now sorted out.
We have homophones for spelling words this week: to, too, two, there, their, they're, here, hear, deer, dear
We are working hard on having self-control in the classroom.
On Thursday, we will be taking a field trip. Instead of the canal trip through the city that was originally planned, we'll be taking a guided hydrofoil tour around St. Petersburg.
